My boyfriend is Student of the Year.”

He put me on a diet program with Zarine Watson. Five months later we did a test shoot. I still remember the day when Karan gifted me this giant cup cake. I was busy gorging on it, when he told my mom that he would be directing the film and wanted me for the lead role.”

Karan Johar’s students, Varun and Alia, rumored to be dating!

Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt stepped into the limelight with their first film, Student of the Year. A Karan Johar directorial venture, this campus romance brought the newcomer trio to the attention of the Indian audiences, film-critics, filmmakers and obviously, rumor-mongers! The newcomers have been subjected to rumors, gossip and linkups time and again. Each of these youngsters have been said to be in and out of love and more recently, Varun Dhawan, the son of the veteran filmmaker David Dhawan, has been linked up with his co-star, Alia Bhatt, Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter.

As per rumors, Alia and Varun have been dating since quite a while now and have been in a relationship ever since the making of Student of the Year. Both, Alia and Varun have disregarded this gossip. While Varun plays Alia’s boyfriend in reel life, in the film Student of the Year, this does not hold true to real life. Though young and fresh to B-town, the actors are taking these dating rumors maturely.

“My father (Mahesh Bhatt) had warned me that this would happen. I was prepared for these speculations. What I’m worried about is the expectations. People are just waiting to write you off. I’ve got this platform at an early age. Many girls would want to be in my shoes. I don’t want such false rumors to overshadow my work,” said Alia Bhatt. The youngster seems to have learned the best ways to deal with bad-press from her filmy family and went on to add, “I don’t really care about people discussing my personal life. I’m fond of Varun and Sid (Siddharth Malhotra) but no I’m not going out with either. And no, I have no boyfriend in Bandra. A boyfriend doesn’t really fit into my scheme of things right now. My boyfriend is Student of the Year.”

Karan Johar’s ‘Koffee with Karan’ given a comedy twist by Rohan Sippy

Rohan Sippy
The Bollywood industry is transforming quickly and filmmakers have begun to resort to innovative ways to market their films. Filmmaker Rohan Sippy recently announced his next directorial venture, Nautanki Saala. Starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Kunaal Roy Kapur, this upcoming comedy has taken up a new means to promotion. An online show called Kutting with Kunaal, hosted by Kunaal Roy Kapur, has taken the internet by storm and is a comedy take on talk shows. From what we’ve heard, this show also has Karan Johar’s popular show, Koffee with Karan, as an inspiration!

Quoting Rohan Sippy, “Our show is a take on all chat shows. Of course, Karan’s show is quite popular and it’s a good reference point. The K of Kutting came from Kunaal and Khurrana. Karan’s show is a big show but ours is a zero-budget version of it. Kunaal is playing the worst talk show host in the world.” The filmmaker also went on to add, “We were thinking of ideas to promote the film and came up with the absurd idea of a talk show. Later, it turned into a fun idea and has developed so well. But the funny part is that it doesn’t promote our film outright.”

Karan Johar’s show, Koffee with Karan, ran for three whole seasons and featured several Bollywood bigwigs, speaking about their lives on-screen and off-screen. The show was noted for Karan Johar’s fresh and witty appeal and began to air in 2004.

“I have never felt more proud,” says Karan Johar, speaking about SOTY

Karan Johar
Dharma Productions honcho, Karan Johar, has been known to draw up big budgets, roping in larger-than-life stars for all of his stories. After having directed Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) and My Name Is Khan (2010), all packing Bollywood bigwigs including the likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Kajol and Hrithik Roshan, Karan Johar stepped away from his usual mix for his upcoming film titled Student of the Year.

A campus romance to be precise, the film stars newcomers Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. This however didn’t keep Karan from setting an equally high budget for the film. The movie is just as glamorous and glitzy as his previous releases and has launched Siddharth, Varun and Alia. When asked about his choice of actors for latest directorial venture, Karan said, “In a star-ridden industry such as ours, launching new talents on such a large scale is always a risk. But nothing ventured, nothing gained. I have never felt more proud.” He went on to add, “After all, there are just as many people who are big and up there. So unless we take the onus, and leverage our position to create new stars, we’ll be running dry soon. I have never worked with newcomers before. But I realized it was time and took up the challenge,” says Karan.

Besides discovering these promising newcomers, Karan Johar has also groomed and trained them, helping them master the trade of acting on the silver screen. The director has played the role of a mentor, coaching Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt for the film.  Quoting Karan Johar, “Hindi cinema has taken a quantum leap in every aspect of its functioning.”
