Karan Johar’s latest, “Student of the Year”, packs a catchy soundtrack

Student of the year
When Karan Johar sets out to direct a film, you’re bound to have one with extravagant performances, catchy songs and addictive dance-steps. Previously, the director had roped in several choreographers and music-directors to give his films an icing-on-the-cake. Till date, the producer-director has directed four films and produced several more. Karan Johar the son of the late founder of Dharma Productions, Yash Johar, has included Jatin-Lalit, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and more recently one of the most sought-after music-directors, Vishal-Shekhar. As far as his previous films are concerned, each of them have managed to grab the attention of the masses with their appealing soundtracks, particularly Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna that opened at #1 and sold nearly 1,900,000 copies in India.

As for his upcoming movie titled Student of the Year, Karan Johar has put Vishal-Shekhar’s expertise to use. The film starring newcomers Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt features an interesting soundtrack that’s bound to have you engrossed all along. With lyrics penned down by Anvita Dutt Guptan, the movie’s soundtrack sports an assortment of music styles. While “Ishq Wala Love” shoulders towards the romantic side, sung by Shekhar Ravjiani, Salim Merchant, Neeti Mohan, the “Disco Song” is a reworked version of Disco Deewane sung by Benny Dayal, Sunidhi Chauhan, Nazia Hassan. And that’s not all. The soundtrack also includes “Vele”, a mix of Bhangra and HipHop, a song that’s crafted for discotheques.

This Karan Johar film comes with punchy tracks, nearly all of which you could shake a leg to. Other songs in the album include Ratta Maar, Radha and Kukkad, sung by Shahid Mallya. The film also packs a track called "Mashup of the Year" by DJ Kiran Kamath and various artists. The music of the film was well received, with the first two music-promos spreading across web-space like a wildfire.

Karan Johar has on previous account shown his love for music and dance, and has also choreographed the song Ratta Maar. Due to the lack of a choreographer on the day the song was being shot, Karan choreographed for the dance sequences himself. The director has also recently judged a dance show, which marked his first appearance as a judge on the small screen. The Sidharth Malhotra-starrer Student of the Year is one of the best examples of Karan Johar’s love for foot-tapping numbers and is one of the most anticipated films of the year, scheduled to release on the 19th of October 2012.

Student of the Year is Sidharth Malhotra’s dream debut

Sidharth MalhotraWhen model-turned-actor Sidharth Malhotra took his first steps into acting, he donned the role of a child-artist in the television series Prithviraj Chauhan. After walking the runway several times for Indian and international designers including Roberto Cavalli, Manish Arora, Manish Malhotra and Rohit Bal., Sidharth Malhotra will now star in his first film along with debutants Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan. For Sidharth, who began modeling at the age of 16 and has won several titles including Gladrags Face of the Year 2009 award and the NDTV Model of the Year 2010, the film will mark the start of a long and promising career. The 24-year-old actor gained recognition from director Karan Johar while working as an assistant director for the film My Name Is Khan.

Quoting Sidharth Malhotra, “One day, I was assisting Karan on My Name is Khan, and now I'm the leading man of Student of the Year. I have to pinch myself to believe this is for real.” For this fresh new actor, the film is a dream start. Not many newcomers hit the silver screen under big banners like Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. Sidharth says, "Sometimes, I'm a bit nervous. But at most times, I'm confident. I have landed a dream debut. Karan, according to me, has the safest pair of hands in the film business.” And that’s not where it all stops for Sidharth. Picking up on his talent, Karan Johar’s close friend and producer Ekta Kapoor, has approached Malhotra with a two-film deal. As expected, the actor is overjoyed at his luck, being offered films even before his debut has hit theater screens. Quoting Karan Johar, who has turned the spotlight on mentees, “I am proud of all three (Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt), and would be proud if they get signed up for some good films outside our banner (Dharma Productions)”.

As for now, Ekta Kapoor hasn’t decided just where to star Sidharth. As per reports, the producer has been drawing up plans for several movies with a host of directors and finding a good fit for the Malhotra could take a while. The producer hasn’t confirmed anything as of now, and Sidharth Malhotra hasn’t yet to make an official statement in regards to the same.

Student of the Year will release on the 19th of October later this year. The film chronicles the lives of three students at a school participating in a one-of-a-kind competition.

Student of the Year; Karan Johar’s next to be the shortest film directed by him

Karan Johar has been rolling out particularly long movies since quite a while now, using his tried-and-tested formula for each of his past four directorial endeavors, which were all deemed successful. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) ran for nearly 185 minutes, Karan’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) was timed at 211 minutes, while, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna remains the director’s longest feature film, running for a whopping 215 minutes. These films have however successfully managed to keep the audience interested irrespective of their duration. However, his upcoming movie, Student of the Year is set to be a trend-breaker of sorts. The director gradually stepped away from his usual trend of naming movies beginning with a “K” and having them run for more than three hours with his movie, My Name Is Khan, released in 2010 (starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol). Quoting Karan Johar, “Yes this is going to be the shortest film of my career. Though I am yet to arrive at the final cut, it should be around 135-140 minutes at maximum.”

Karan JoharAlso, the forthcoming movie will be Karan Johar’s first without Shah Rukh Khan. Instead, the movie will star three newcomers, all featuring on the big screen for the first time including Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. The fact that the film packs no superstars could be one of the reasons Johar has decided to keep this movie short. On previous account, films produced by the director under the Dharma Productions banner have been crafted short, though Karan Johar himself has never directed a film this short. This is also the first time Karan Johar is directing a movie, which does not star Shahrukh Khan in the lead. However, the news of Shahrukh Khan doing a cameo has been doing the rounds, exciting people around the country. Shahrukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment banner has also lent a hand in the film’s production along with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.

As per general knowledge, a shorter film is bound to rake in higher collections, with a shorter run-time allowing for more screenings in multiplexes in a day. Also, the modern-day movie-watcher is known to prefer shorter films.

In all, Karan Johar seems sure of his upcoming release, which has also been crowned as one of the most anticipated films of the year. Student Of The Year is scheduled to release on the 19th of October and will have model-turned-actor Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt (Director Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter) and Varun Dhawan (Director David Dhawan’s son) playing the roles of three students participating in a school competition.

Karan Johar- And his passion for films

Karan Johar started off his career as an actor in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, the question is that, did he always wish to become a director? Or did he have interest in something else? He must have started off as an actor but now he has become a great director. May be he is just following his father’s footsteps, as his father, Yash Johar was also a well known director in Bollywood.

The production house known as Dharma production was established by his father. This production house has given birth to many hit films. Apart from acting and directing, Karan has also tried his luck on production, screenwriting, costume designing and also worked as a television host. He has excelled in almost all of these fields. Karan has always experimented with his films; this can be projected through the different story lines of his movies. His movies doesn’t belong to a particular genre, there has been movies that had attracted critics like Kabhie Alvida Naa Kehna and My Name is Khan because both of these movies were based on the themes such as adultery and religious discrimination.

He always motivates the young and new comers, and so in his productions he has introduced capable directors like Nikhil Advani, Tarun Mansukhani, Rensil D’silva and Ayan Mukherjee. He was so fond of the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai lead pair Sharukh and Kajol that he re-casted them in his family entertainer Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.
