Student of the Year; Karan Johar’s next to be the shortest film directed by him

Karan Johar has been rolling out particularly long movies since quite a while now, using his tried-and-tested formula for each of his past four directorial endeavors, which were all deemed successful. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) ran for nearly 185 minutes, Karan’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) was timed at 211 minutes, while, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna remains the director’s longest feature film, running for a whopping 215 minutes. These films have however successfully managed to keep the audience interested irrespective of their duration. However, his upcoming movie, Student of the Year is set to be a trend-breaker of sorts. The director gradually stepped away from his usual trend of naming movies beginning with a “K” and having them run for more than three hours with his movie, My Name Is Khan, released in 2010 (starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol). Quoting Karan Johar, “Yes this is going to be the shortest film of my career. Though I am yet to arrive at the final cut, it should be around 135-140 minutes at maximum.”

Karan JoharAlso, the forthcoming movie will be Karan Johar’s first without Shah Rukh Khan. Instead, the movie will star three newcomers, all featuring on the big screen for the first time including Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. The fact that the film packs no superstars could be one of the reasons Johar has decided to keep this movie short. On previous account, films produced by the director under the Dharma Productions banner have been crafted short, though Karan Johar himself has never directed a film this short. This is also the first time Karan Johar is directing a movie, which does not star Shahrukh Khan in the lead. However, the news of Shahrukh Khan doing a cameo has been doing the rounds, exciting people around the country. Shahrukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment banner has also lent a hand in the film’s production along with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.

As per general knowledge, a shorter film is bound to rake in higher collections, with a shorter run-time allowing for more screenings in multiplexes in a day. Also, the modern-day movie-watcher is known to prefer shorter films.

In all, Karan Johar seems sure of his upcoming release, which has also been crowned as one of the most anticipated films of the year. Student Of The Year is scheduled to release on the 19th of October and will have model-turned-actor Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt (Director Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter) and Varun Dhawan (Director David Dhawan’s son) playing the roles of three students participating in a school competition.
